In Hermeticism and other esoteric occult traditions, The Great Work, or Magnum Opus, is the process for spiritual evolution of the human soul, the dismantling of the ego and attainment of enlightenment within a physical lifetime. And the 22 Major Arcana cards of the Tarot are a visual timeline of this lifetime enlightenment.

The 22 Major Arcana are typically divided into three phases of experience, with The Fool acting as the soul moving through them.
Phase one represent the soul being born into the physical world and building a functional human ego, the necessary baseline of human existence before any spiritual work can begin.
The Magician & The High Priestess are when the soul encounters the ultimate duality of the universe, the conscious willpower of the divine masculine and the creative inspiration of the divine feminine.
With the Empress & The Emperor, the soul is shaped by earthly authority, the abundance of nature and the structure of society.
The Hierophant introduces the soul to organized religion, philosophy, and other institutional traditions.
With the Lovers, the soul reaches moral autonomy, learning to make the proper conscious choices based on personal values and divine alignment.
The Chariot is the culmination of phase one, the soul has mastered its physical environment and now drives a chariot of worldly identity. The ego body is formed.
Phase two is when the soul turns its gaze inward to undergo an alchemical transformation and experience the first stages of enlightenment.
Strength reflects when the soul develops a quiet inner stamina to tame their animal instincts, and The Hermit is when the soul retreats into isolation and self-reflection in seek of the truth.
Wheel of Fortune is when the soul realizes the laws of cause and effect, destiny, and the cyclical nature of life. And Justice is when it accepts absolute personal responsibility for its actions.
The Hanged Man marks a massive spiritual turning point when the soul surrenders its egoic desires, and chooses to view the world from a spiritual perspective. The soul now remembers that its a soul.
This inevitably leads to the Death card, which is the essential “Ego Death” of the Great Work when all earthly illusions are completely stripped away to make room for rebirth.
Temperance is the alchemical stage when the soul mixes the opposites within themselves to create a balanced and refined, holy vessel for the soul to be reborn into.
The final phase traces the soul’s ascent beyond the human mind and into the cosmic consciousness.
The Devil is the ultimate test before liberation when the soul must confront its final shadow.
And the Tower is the flash of divine lightning that frees the divine spark.
The Star, The Moon, & The Sun, mark the soul’s ascension through the celestial spheres where it experiences healing, the collective unconscious, and the blinding radiant clarity of truth.
Judgement is the resurrection of the soul, reborn, fully enlightened, and still in the flesh.
And finally, the World, or the Universe, is the completion of the Great Work. The Fool’s journey is now complete, they are in the world, but not of it. They are entirely awake to their divine nature.
